Its main use is building and upgrading new buildings. It is also used in all building upgrades, it can also be obtained from PvE combat against the Maar Confederacy who specialise in it's production. You can also earn it by opening Crystal Resource Crates bought in the Store or by converting other resources at the Resource Converter.
